7322 Bright Ave F is a special Uptown Whittier home with a story that will tug at your heart strings.
When I met my clients for their first listing appointment, I saw their 1 year old little boy reading his numerous books in a cute reading nook nestled under a beautiful Spanish style staircase. Little did I know, the significance of a small child LEARNING in this home could hold. A home that I would soon understand has been filled with love, knowledge, and young minds for years.
7322 Whittier F was owned from 1981– 2017 by Les Howard, a professor at Whittier College. Les was a well-known professor, known for his unique bond to his students & his love for teaching students through immersion. For 20 of the years Les owned this home, Les taught an Urban Studies class out of this home’s living room. The home served as his classroom, and excursions were a signature part of the course. The excursions were designed to force students out of their comfort zones, led to exploration of different neighborhoods, the inner city, and even Skid Row. He encouraged using public transportation as the method of travel for full immersion into the surrounding communities. These experiences sparked intellectual discussions about the issue of poverty, homelessness, & overall urban development. On one special excursion, students picked up some Spanish tiles from Downtown LA. Les installed these yellow and blue tiles along the footsteps of his home’s interior stairs as a way to show his students this home in a way belonged to them too.
When Les passed away several year back, the home was left to Whittier College. The college remodeled the entire house before selling it to the current owners, but kept the stairs as a homage of Les Howard’s teachings and his impact on the city of Whittier.
The current owners (the wife a teacher herself) have kept the spanish stairs, and the home appears to have kept the nostalagic memory alive, filled with books for the young and old, holding a true legacy that will always be dear to my heart as a special home I am honored to present to you.
